  Arthritis / Pain

Arthritis is a condition in which inflammation occurs in a patient's joints. There are two kinds of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Two million Malaysians suffer from arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition affecting the whole body, but primarily the joints. It is usually first noticed in the small joints of the hands, feet and wrists. It may later spread to the larger joints - the elbows, shoulders and knees.

Rheumatoid arthritis can result in a loss of appetite and a general feeling of being unwell.

People between the ages of 35 and 50 are most likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis, with women 3 times more likely to develop it than men.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition caused by changes in the fluids in a patient's joints and a general deterioration of joint structure. It affects all parts of a joint, causing pain and stiffness, especially after physical activity.

Osteoarthritis is common among both men and women.

Men are more likely to suffer osteoarthritis of the hip. Women are more likely to suffer osteoarthritis of the fingers.

Treatment

Taking regular exercise and controlling weight can relieve symptoms of rheumatism. Practicing good posture also helps, as it reduces the stress on vulnerable joints, particularly the neck, back, hips and knees.
